MANAGERS END
OF
SEASON REPORT
A momentous season for Cowfold finished with the first team winning
promotion by finishing second in the league and also winning the cup.
It is the first time in the club’s history that the first team have
won a West Sussex Football League Cup.
The Reserves have also enjoyed a good season and finished 5th
in their division.
It was a strange season with the number of games called off in January
and February leaving a fixture backlog to be picked up in April / May.
It meant playing two or three times a week and with promotion and the
cup to go for every game was like a cup final. In the end promotion
was secured with a playoff win against Petworth 3-1 after having
secured 2nd place in the league by winning the last two
league games. With so many games having to be played in such a short
period of time the team did remarkably well to cope with a number of
injuries to key players.
The Cup win was fantastic for the club, beating a strong Stedham side
on penalties after the match played at Arundel finished 1-1. Leading
scorer Ant Parsons scored the Cowfold goal bringing his total for the
season to 20. He was unfortunately injured in the final and missed
the playoff against Petworth. The winning penalty was scored by Brett
Hinton to start the celebrations!
The squad was well settled throughout the season with very few changes
to the starting 11. The defence had an outstanding season after a
difficult start and although goalkeeper James Fisher didn’t have too
much to do in many of the matches he was in excellent form again this
season. The very consistent Adam Harding started every one of the 34
matches the club played this season and the excellent Kyle Jordan was
also ever present. Tom Easton played a key role in organising the back
line and was deservedly voted the Players Player of the year. Ben
Tucker gradually established himself in the side in his first season
and became a regular in the starting line up in the second half of the
season. Dave Whiting made important contributions in both defence and
midfield he scored the all important second goal in the playoff win
against Petworth. Steve Lloyd enjoyed one of his best seasons for the
club and will be remembered for his late winning goal in the cup
semi-final. Craig Deane has captained the team superbly and was a real
driving force in midfield he won the most match of the matches through
the season. He also finished with 10 goals from midfield which was an
excellent return (don’t ask him about his penalty in the cup final
though!). The signing of Dean Robinson in midfield made a huge
difference this season and he has added real quality to the team. Mark
Smith has settled into his midfield-holding role superbly and has
enjoyed a very successful season even though he was frustrated not to
have scored! The strikers have enjoyed excellent seasons with Ant
Parsons scoring 20 goals as the club-leading scorer he has also been a
key player with his general play. His partner in the forward line
Brett Hinton also enjoyed a very successful season contributing 13
goals plus the winning penalty in the cup final. James Wrigley was
playing very well until getting injured at Christmas and we look
forward to him coming back fit next season. Sam Bray, Ben Tarrant,
Craig Campbell and Luke Tarrant have all made very important
contributions when they have been available and in particular Craig
Campbell and Luke Tarrant scored important goals at the right time.
Thanks to all the players for their commitment this season, they have
deserved their success.
